These photos trigger a trunk-full of memories about “fashion!”
(1) In my Grade One photo, I was wearing a pale green smocked dress made by my Great-Auntie Nina. Mom did my hair in the morning, and I think she put a mint-green bow in it. The heart-shaped gold locket was accented by a tiny green peridot. My Mom lent me the locket because it matched my dress. (She told me in October 2007 that she still has the locket.)
(2) In Grade Three, I had a blouse with tiny bouquets of flowers on it- a favourite. I also had my ears pierced- my Mom’s co-worker, Peggy, had done it earlier that year with some ice, a bar of soap and a big needle. I remember that Mom couldn’t even come into the house when Peggy was doing it! To this day, one of my earring-holes is a wee bit higher than the other. I remember a summer at about this age when Mary and I BEGGED our Mom for bikinis. Mom was a good sewer, so she made them for us. They had little skirted bottoms, and were made from polyester crimpoline- the ‘fabric-du-jour,’ back then, as some will recall! (We looked sooooo cute.) I can remember us both running around outside wearing the bikinis; probably tearing through the sprinkler, which we did a lot in the summer to cool off. My little girly-girl bikini was mint green with a checked skirt and I THINK that Mary’s was red.
(3) I remember that my best friend Karen had the same blue, navy and red print top I was wearing in this picture. Our Moms ordered them from the Sears catalogue. (Karen and I thought that was pretty hilarious!)
Glasses frames and lenses were really big in the 1970’s & ‘80’s, so in my teenage pictures, you can see the glasses more than the person wearing them! They were like owl eyes!! Glasses now, in comparison, are so small.
(4) The outfit I’m wearing here was brand-spanking new. I was in grade 10, about age 15, and I was so proud of that outfit! (That probably explains why I was showing it off!) I think I got the jeans at a chain store called Thrifty’s at Champlain Place, which was THE coolest place to buy jeans. Belts were always worn with jeans back then. The pink blouse ended up being a real favourite of mine, and I wore it until it pretty much fell apart! The pale blue Volkswagen Beetle was ever-present when I was a kid. Mom called it her “cookie-can”- I can clearly see her getting into her Beetle in the mornings with her cup of coffee (black; one ice cube) carefully balanced as she started it up.
Funny what memories a few photos can trigger!
